Matthews departs from the No. 1 team in the Eastern Conference after joining the franchise last summer on a one-year deal. He averaged 7.4 points on 36.4% shooting from long range in 67 games for Milwaukee last season.
In Los Angeles, Matthews will likely work his way into the rotation and help fill the void of Danny Green, who was traded to Oklahoma City earlier this week.
Matthews, who joins his seventh team in the NBA, and recent acquisition Dennis Schroder are two new pieces looking to help the Lakers repeat as champions next summer.
Lakers to Sign Wes Matthews to One-Year Deal
The Los Angeles Lakers will sign veteran guard Wesley Matthews to a one-year, $3.6 million deal, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. Matthews played the 2019-20 campaign with the Milwaukee Bucks.
The move gives L.A. an established three-and-d veteran who has had no shortage of experience on winning ball clubs. He’ll slot into a Lakers rotation as they set out to defend their title.
The acquisition of Matthews, using the team’s bi-annual exception, will hard cap the franchise, meaning they couldn’t exceed the $139 million tax apron.
Matthews is 34 years old but averaged 7.4 points per game last year. He could fill a similar role to what Danny Green filled last, albeit at a considerably more team friendly price.
